Possible cause for this is issue is that an earlier version of Messenger Plus is installed that is causing an incompatibility with Windows Live Messenger.

The following steps would guide you to configure security settings, verify if software is the latest, and remove third party software.

First, try to disable your firewall completely, test the messenger software’s functionality regarding your issue.

After which configure your firewall and test again the software’s functionality regarding your issue;

1. To configure Windows Live Messenger through the most common firewalls, visit http://spaces.msn.com/messenger-support and look for steps under "How to enable Windows Live Messenger through a Firewall" on how to enable Windows Live Messenger through the most common firewalls. Click the appropriate link based on the firewall you have installed on your computer.

2. If you have any other firewall that is not listed, see the firewall manufacturer's documentation or contact your firewall manufacturer to configure Messenger. To find the MSN Messenger executable file, click "Start", Click "Run", type "%systemdrive%\program Files\MSN Messenger\MSNMSGR.exe", and then click "OK".

3. Determine what version of Windows Live Messenger is installed on the computer, and then upgrade if it is required:
a. Visit the following Web site:
http://spaces.msn.com/messenger-support/blog/cns!8B3F39C76A8B853F!3772.entry
b. Determine whether you are running the latest version. Download the latest version, if it is necessary.

4. Remove any third-party add-ons to Windows Live Messenger, such as Messenger Plus or Smiley Central.

I hope these steps resolve your concern with Windows Live Messenger.

I have disabled Zonealarm, then tried to log on again, and it still comes up with the same error.

The following is a suggestion given by Jonathan Kay

Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger/MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger

[If you disabled your firewall in the past, it still may be blocking Messenger -- try restarting it and see if that helps the situation. You also might try uninstalling an
installed firewall, to verify that it isn't causing a problem (even if it is disabled).
Clear your IE cache and cookies -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then

Internet Options, then click the Delete Files button, and when that's complete click the

Delete Cookies button.

Check your IE Security settings -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then

Internet Options, then Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section, and verify that "Check

for server certificate revocation" is unchecked. Also verify that 'Use SSL 2.0' and Use SSL

3.0' is checked, then click OK.

Click Start, then Run, and enter the following:

regsvr32 softpub.dll

then click OK

and do the same for the following:

regsvr32 wintrust.dll

regsvr32 initpki.dll

regsvr32 MSXML3.dll]

Hi everybody,

I think I've good news so let me share it with you...

I've spent some time during the past days trying to solve this error 8100030d.

I started my search in Microsoft's website and went through many others including blogs, forums, etc, but nothing seemed to solve my problem and error 8100030d had become a persistent error for me.

I found this very strange and started to believe that the source of the problem had to be something really simple, kind of something from the common sense for the QA Microsoft gurus. I don't believe they would release this new msgr version knowing that millions of people could sooner or later run into problems just like we did...

So, I did some tests in my computers, searched for additional information that could allow me to get a better understanding on how the messenger works, and step by step tried to give some form to this misterious puzzle...

Suddendly, I came up with an idea. "What about if I disable Pop-Ups? hum, let me try it..."

NO WAY! Guess what? It did it! Yea, disable pop-ups! I couldn't believe it!

I hate pop-ups so I didn't tottaly allow them but instead I did the following:
1- Opened my default browser, Internet Explorer 7,
2- clicked on Tools
3- selected Pop-UP Blocker
4- clicked Pop-UP Blocker Settings
5- added *.live.com to my allowed websites list.
6- clicked on the Close button
7- closed all my browser windows and re-opened Internet Explorer 7.

And here we go, tried to login to my messenger and it worked!!!

Note that my windows firewall was already properly configured. It was configured by the installation itself allowing access to:
Windows Live Messenger 8.1 and Windows Live Messenger 8.1 phone (msnmsgr.exe and livecall.exe respectively). .

Hope my experience helps you.

All the best,
PE

PS: If you use other Pop-Up blcker(s) you may have to apply the same procedure to it or to all of them.

Hey,

Had the same problem, but I don't have ZA and the firewall I use is configured to let WLM pass.

Anyhow, try to sync the clock with an online timeserver. Worked for me!

I had the same problem before.

Okay got a fix for all cases with a firewalled router. Reset internet connection first, either in software or by powering off and on. Wish I had thought of or found this earlier it would have saved all the messing around purging dlls and being told your softwall was the cause when it was obviously not.

Thanks Craig and Denise. Worked for me.

This problem has been driving me NUTS and today I finally figured out the fix. If you are running ZoneAlarm Security Suite 7, turn IM security off!

I've now tried every recommendation listed here. NOTHING works. I'm in a large corporate environment with no access to our corporate firewalls, routers, switches and the like. I've tried, enabling pop-ups from my default browser, I've tried running the scripts to renew the DLLs, I've install the most recent version of MSN live messenger, none of these have made any difference.

The paculiar thing with this error is that is seems to be linked to one specific MSN account as I can log in to other MSN account with live messenger without a hickup.

Is there anything ELSE someone can suggest?

A highly frustrated soul.

I tried 3 registry cleaners- i had regcure installed on my computer but it didn't do the job, i tried a free tool called ccleaner but that only made things worse, and then reluctantly i tried the ms-errors program which seems to have fixed my problem. for the last 3 days since i installed ms errors i did not get any annoying error messages. if the errors come back i will be very pissed off but if they don't then this software was definitely worth the investment

Nothing has fixed my problem.

I don't have Zone Alarm.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling.

I specifically allowed *live.com as a safe site on pop-up blocker.

I just downloaded and ran ms-error fix (paid $17 for it).

I just found an OLD version of messenger and uninstalled that.

I've tried deleting my cookies, doing the "regsvr32 softpub.dll" et. al in "run."

None of these things worked. I'm on a company machine, so I don't want to mess with the Firewall settings. But this error happened suddenly 2 weeks ago, so I highly doubt it's a Firewall issue. Also, our IT dept. has "messenger" specifically set to "allow" in our Firewall settings.

I created a NEW e-mail address with a live.com alias instead of my current hotmail.com one. THAT new e-mail address works. messenger opens just fine.

BUT, no contacts. It keeps telling me that to import contacts, it needs to find your contacts in a .ctt file .ctt files do not exist on my machine. and importing my contacts from hotmail.com into live.com works for mail, but messenger wants you to re-invite all those people to your live.com thing, which is just not going to work.

HELP? Anyone? Any last resort of a fix here? This is driving me nuts!!

To qate,
what you can do is exactly what I did which is download "aMSN" (an MSN clone designed originally for linux) and sign in on your old account and save your contacts there. they will save as a .ctt file and you can then go into your new account and import them. the only problem is if you have the same luck as me, that account will stop working as well, in which case I suggest downloading an older version of Windows Live Messenger until they release a stable version.
