System Idle Process @ 98%

The Problem:- I am running Windows XP Home and the System Idle process seems to be at 98% ; is there a problem?

Resolution:- The System Idle Process doesn't do anything, its just what the cpu does when its not doing anything. If the system idle process is at 98% it doesn't mean your processor is 98% busy with the system idle process hogging it,thus it's actually 2% busy.

When the hard disk is accessed by the computer the read/write heads are moved quickly above the disk surfaces. As a result noise emits. But if you feel that the noise is too loud and rather unusual then it will be ideal to get it diagnosed by hard disk diagnostic tool. This tool is available in the specific hard disk manufacturer's website.
Most of the noise the user hears are vibrations the hard disk transmits to the rest of the case.So make sure that the srews are tightly attached.Another thing using a rather thick case reduces the noise.

I had the problem where the hard drive was running for long periods although nothing was actually running. First I thought that it was the "system idle process" since it showed high usage percentages. Turns out the problem was some applications in the startup folder. In my case these were printer files for an old printer. It seems that the system would keep trying to find the missing printer and accessing the hard drive. You may want to try this:On the start menu, select "Run" and enter msconfig. This will bring up the System Configuration Utility. Select the Startup tab and look at applications that are not needed. Disable unneeded files only. Restart to see if the problem goes away.
